You're Out of Touch, I'm Out of Time

When will establishment Dems wake up?

Let’s start with Israel and Gaza. Here’s were Democrats are on that:

Pete Buttigieg went on the Pod Bros podcast and gave a terrible, mealymouthed answer on the topic, which Hasan Abi/Piker roasted him for. I’ll outsource my commentary on this to him:

If you don’t want to watch the video, the gist of it is that Buttigieg an “it’s an important problem, blah blah blah” answer which shows that institutional Dems haven’t begun to grapple with the base’s absolute rejection of Israel’s actions in Gaza. I’m not always a fan of Piker’s commentary, but he’s on point here.

Then, there’s Cuomo. He’s been stinking up the joint in NYC, and the latest Siena poll is awful for him:

A new Siena Institute poll released on Tuesday shows New York City’s Democratic socialist mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, leading former New York governor Andrew Cuomo by 19 percentage points – while the Republican congresswoman Elise Stefanik is chipping away at incumbent Democrat Kathy Hochul’s lead in a hypothetical contest for the New York governor’s mansion in 2026.

Hochul’s lead over Stefanik, who was nominated to be US ambassador to the United Nations before withdrawing to help Republicans maintain a majority in Congress, has now dropped from 23 points in June to 14 points.

I’ll write more about the Stefanik thing at another time, but I’ll note that the same poll showed that 49% of respondents thought she’d be a bad governor, so I don’t know about the Hochul/Stefanik head-to-head. The Mamdani/Cuomo poll also had a small sample so take that for what you will.

Anyway, caveats aside, it’s sure not obvious that Cuomo is gaining ground on Mamdani, nevermind that other candidates in the race will siphon off some support. Cuomo’s Xitter account is just full of nasty, negative campaigning, which in my view is just a way for him to remind voters what an asshole he is. TBone posted Mamdani’s response video yesterday. The difference between the video and Cuomo’s attacks is that Mamdani hits Cuomo’s record, which is terrible.

Buttigieg’s corporate-speak waffle on Gaza, and Cuomo’s nasty, negative attacks (coupled with the inability of most NYC Dem leaders refusal to endorse their party’s nominee) are just to instances where Dem leadership and wannabe leadership are completely out of step with the beliefs of the base.
