The Times is very important and powerful, you see. They can make someone into something they’re not (Mamdani into an anti-semite), but ignore the obvious anti-semitism of someone who’s blamed Jewish space lasers for wildfires.
The politics of this are obvious. Greene was spurned by Trump when she wanted to run for Senate in Georgia. She’s also reading the writing on the wall (unlike the Times and the DC press) sees that Trump is weak and time-limited, and is positioning herself to be a player in the post-Trump Republican Party. Put a dash of crazy on top of that. Add a sprinkle of “Christian forgiveness” which means that the tiniest expression of regret by the right kind of person (white evangelical) is enough to absolve them of horrific behavior. Then you have her current strategy.
I doubt that disavowing Q-Anon and criticizing Trump is a winner in a Republican primary in Georgia, or on the wingnut welfare circuit, but what do I know? I’m not as powerful and insightful as the New York Times.
