Will They Ever Learn?

These are not normal times and policy proposals for the future won't get it done

I was going to write the next post in my ongoing series on “Hidden Structures that Create and Maintain Gross Inequality”, but that will have to wait for another time (soon).

I came across these talking points from Schumer’s office and, well, JFC - HOW BADLY IS HE GOING TO BLOW ANY CHANCE WE’VE GOT TO GET OUT OF THIS THING.

Here they are:

Just got this forwarded. Here are the talking points Schumer's team just emailed out to their allies TODAY - this afternoon. The words "Minnesota" or "ICE" don't appear anywhere here.

My god! The same old yada yada yada pablum. Yeah, there are some vague policies in there, but nothing immediate, nothing too specific, nothing descriptive enough, and nothing that John and Jane America - who don’t follow politics closely and are struggling to stay above water and keep it together - could even remotely grab onto as something that will meaningfully and positively impact their lives NOW.

Tying the madness in Minnesota to affordability as AOC did with healthcare) is a win-win. You literally don’t even always need to talk about “defunding ICE” (although I’m fine with doing that as well as long as we find a way to give voters a reason to actually get excited to vote for us).

How about stating that our kids are going to get sick from diseases we thought we left in the dustbin of history because Republicans gave DHS $190 billion in the last budget - more than every other country’s total annual military budget except for the U.S. and China) while destroying public health.

How about what Anne Caprara said on Bluesky:

I implore my fellow Dems not to overthink this. You can just say - I’m against the government shooting people in the face for no good reason. This is not hard. Same with the ludicrous invasion of Greenland. Democrats are anti-invasion of Greenland bc it’s the dumbest thing ever. Be ruthlessly blunt.

Look, internecine battles are never fun and not always productive. But if we don’t get thought to our elected leaders, Schumer will give this away before we can even blink. I developed a relationship with a few current Senators when I last ran. I called their offices today, told them the fight is now or never, and asked for them to call me back - one actually did. I spoke with one of them a few minutes ago. Told him basically what Simon Rosenberg wrote today - just a bit more bluntly (also told him this is THE reason he is in office right now - there is no other fight):

I think Dem strategists and comms/data folks need to recognize that we are in a period of discontinuity. What's happening now is not like what's come before. It's all new. And we need to stay close to the data that's in front of us, not bring old fights into the ones we now find ourselves in.”

Who here volunteers to figuratively (and maybe literally without harm) slap Schumer upside the head? Bueller? Bueller?? Bueller???

PS - this is… great (read some of the replies).
