Saw this post this morning:
I follow and respect Dr. Jack Brown. However, in this instance, he’s falling into the “institutional” Democrats “pretend to do something while wimping out” trap.
Beshear isn’t actually calling out McConnell. He’s sending another letter that is trying to seem forceful but one that has absolutely zero teeth and will do absolutely nothing to force McConnell’s, his team’s or fellow Republican’s hands on this.
Beshear writes, “…consider this letter a demand for his Senate staff to be honest and transparent with the people of Kentucky.”
Oooooh. I bet McConnell’s team is quaking in their boots after reading that.
Let’s face it - they haven’t been honest or transparent for the past 2 months. Are they going to start now because Beshear demanded it of them?
Beshear follows that “demand” up with this gem: “As the Governor of the State you serve, I am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.”
Yeah - that’ll do it.
McConnell’s entire career has been about obstruction while bending (and breaking) rules, laws and norms to get his desired outcome. Beshear “calling” on McConnell to come clean will have no more impact on McConnell and his team than trying to being down an elephant with a Bee Bee gun.
If nothing happens by August 3, McConnell gets his way. I’ve said this before. Beshear should 1) appoint a new Senator and/or 2) call for a new special election subject to "live" proof McConnell has "capacity". And do both before 8/3. I can’t think of any real downside to doing this, legally, politically or otherwise. Yeah - the Republicans will scream bloody murder, but all Beshear has to do is calmly and simply reply that he wants live action proof that McConnell has capacity, which is the minimum that an elected Kentucky official owes the people he was elected to represent. As someone else on Bluesky wrote (sadly, I can’t find it to give credit), Beshear should just show up at the hospital to try and talk to McConnell. He’s the f*^king Governor, for Pete’s sake and McConnell is an elected official who may be dead or incapacitated.
JFC dude - grow a pair and actually take some action that will force them to respond.
