An excellent night for Democrats

Last night was one of those nights where all you needed was a “D” after your name to win.

In Virginia, every county went more blue than the last election. The election was called for Abagail Spanberger a few minutes after the polls closed. As I write this, it looks like she’ll have a supermajority in the legislature there. Jay Jones, who had an issue when some impolitic remarks came to light, won the AG’s race, and Virginia will have a Democrat as Lieutenant Governor. This is pure anecdata, but yesterday morning I talked with a guy who lives in the Virginia DC suburbs, and his take was that everyone was mad about the shutdown and Trump firing government workers, so the conclusion was essentially foregone.

Mikie Sherrill will be the new Governor of New Jersey after some rocky polling that was totally fucking wrong.

It’s notable that both Sherrill and Spanberger’s races were absolutely inundated with anti-trans ads, so that issue seems to have run its course, and the cowards who wanted to throw trans people under the bus can now shut the fuck up.

JD Vance’s half-brother, Ethan Allan (joke) lost his race for mayor of Cincinnati, bigly.

The Democratic Supreme Court judges in Pennsylvania were all retained.

Maine voters rejected an initiative that would make it harder to vote in their state.

In Georgia, two Democrats won their races for the Public Utility Commission, the first Democrats to win a non-federal statewide election in almost 20 years.

Oh, and a fellow named Zohran Kwame Mamdani had his race for Mayor of New York called by DecisionDeskHQ 3 minutes after the polls closed. The Baileys are crying softly in a corner of their basement in Long Island. Schumer wouldn’t say who he voted for. He needs to be yeeted out of leadership, and then out of the Senate, for his fecklessness.

The only question I have about this is: what channel?

I will be too drunk and high to watch the California Prop 50 results but the DownBallot has everything you need right here.

If these results don’t stiffen the spines of Democrats in Congress, who were making noises about a “deal” to end the shutdown, I don’t know what the hell will.
