War Has Consequences

Deploying the guard has consequences

First, I’m very thankful for Kay and Joe joining the blog, and I’m thankful for all of the readers and commenters. I especially appreciate the quality of the comments — one of the reasons I started this blog is to try to get back to the days when blog comments were on topic and intelligent. I think it’s working here.

Since this is a political blog I’m going to write about what happened yesterday. I don’t blame anyone who wants to tune out, so if you don’t want to read or discuss it, this is your warning.

The guy who thinks that soldiers are “losers” is now yelling about the guy who shot two National Guard soldiers who are taking part in the performance orchestrated by him. Those poor soldiers would be home with their families getting ready to tuck into some turkey and watch some football if Trump and his gang hadn’t decided to use them as props for TV hits.

The shooter is apparently an Afghan national that we brought here after he worked for the CIA. Is there any better encapsulation of the “long tail” of the forever war that we waged after 9/11? He’s 29 years old. He grew up knowing nothing but war. And now he created more casualties.

The whole thing is sad and terrible and another reminder of where we are as a country.
