Just think, if we had let the Right and Center of the Party knock Mamdani out with pre -election smears we’d have gross, corrupt liar Cuomo instead of the great person that we got.
I have a local story about universal pre K. About ten years ago, I was asked to volunteer to head up outreach to women to get them to vote for a public school levy. The levy included universal pre K (but not starting at 2, ours starts at 3).
My city and county are about 50% “free and reduced lunch”, in public schools parlance, which means “50% lower income households with children”. But that’s not how we sold the pre k. We sold the prek as “certified teachers, safe and on the same campus as the public school where your children already go”.
The levy passed, with my higher income neighborhood turning in the best pro levy performance. The higher income pre k kids go to the public program, and so do the lower income kids, therefore assuring the pre K will always be funded. I think of this as putting upper middle and middle class people “in front” of poor people. Set it up right, and any future political actor has to GET THRU the upper and middle to harm the poor people,
