Ugly America

My sister says my husband plays all the “rich people” sports and she’s right - tennis, skiing, sailing and swimming. He doesn’t, however, play golf, I think because he thinks golfers are tacky suburbanites. His sporting friend group is golf adjacent though so although I don’t care for sports (but I’m thrilled if you do!) this came to my attention:

This was a MAGA event, through and through. Donald Trump kicked it off showing up with his ridiculous celebrity entourage and the golf media and fans welcomed Dear Leader by performing The Trump Dance (I’m not kidding). There are no MAGA assholes like NY MAGA assholes.

The US fans and the American Team then behaved like complete assholes for the next two days, including screaming homophobic slurs at the European players, shouting insults at the players wives and firing a drink at a player’s wife’s head.

Then they lost the match to the Europeans. Because of course they did. We know how to strut and brag and scream slurs but winning? Nah. That we can’t do.

Rory Mcllroy said what really struck him was how the MAGA Ryder fans never cheered for their own team. All they did was attack the European team (well, mostly their wives, but, again, this is MAGA). He doesn’t understand it, but I think we do. All they know how to do is tear down and destroy. Eventually they’ll destroy one another, simply because the far Right movement is wholly based on hate and negativity.
