These are Bad People

... and some of them run greedy corporations

Mister Mix stole my morning post today (good on him - we’re on the same page) and TBone did a nice job of linking to some more info in the comments, but I thought I’d quickly add my perspective on the SNAP crisis.

Yes - there is a contingency fund of $5 billion that the Trump Admin won’t tap (and the execrable Mike Johnson agrees with that decision). This is the end result of truly uncaring and bad people being in charge. And when I say bad, I mean disgustingly deplorable (thanks, Hillary!)

But one of TBone’s links in the comments - https://bsky.app/profile/brian-goldstone.bsky.social/post/3m4572m6nqs22 - gets to the heart of the matter.

A capitalist system that rewards greedy corporations and [punishes hard working people.

Brian Goldstone (‪@brian-goldstone.bsky.social) writes:

You know who the real freeloaders in this country are? Not people who rely on SNAP, but corporations whose business model depends on wages so low that taxpayers have to feed their workers.

Since I believe gross inequality is the societal issue of our time (climate change being the existential issue for the entire world), I have been pounding what Brian says since the day I got involved in policy/politics and decided to run for office.

It used to be that there was a clear bargain in this country for workers. Work a full-time job with decent pay and benefits, and, in return, you could live a life of dignity (not necessarily get rich) and support the average-sized family.

It has not been that way since the days of Reagan. Companies like McDonald’s and Walmart have enriched their C-Suite honchos and shareholders by knowingly and purposely using our taxpayer dollars as a “pay substitute” instead of paying their employees a living wage.

Late-stage capitalism run by greedy, bad people.
