I hesitated to write about this entire sad (yes, sad) and bizarre (yes, bizarre) saga of Natalie Harp.

My focus isn’t on the weird and, frankly, uncomfortable details of her relationship with the President or her clearly abnormal attraction to the President. No - my focus is on how this relationship reflects on the President himself and reinforces his unfitness for office and the damage it is doing to our country and the people who live here and who he was elected to serve.

First, a few prefaces to my main point:

  • It is not uncommon for a relatively young person (someone in their 20s or early 30s) to have influence in politics in Washington, DC. One of the little-known secrets in DC is that after you get past elected officials and top appointees in the Executive Branch Departments, much of the behind-the-scenes work is done by fresh-faced, true-believer 20-somethings. So, Harp’s proximity to power is not unusual.

  • What is unusual is her seeming mentally unstable devotion to Trump (and, as we are finding out from her brother, perhaps to other previous Presidents).

  • Also unusual - to say the least - is her over-the-top and clearly unhealthy desire to please and be something special to Trump, from her insane “love letters” to her need to always be around/near/with Trump.

I prefer to look at this strange affair from the perspective of the person who really maters - Donald Trump.

You see, his need to be fawned upon by a clearly obsessed younger aide is all of a piece with his fixation on glorifying Washington DC (the reflecting pool, the ballroom, the arch, the national mall, the public golf courses, the Qatari Air Force One Jumbo Jet, etc.). Trump doesn’t give a sh*t about the projects themselves. They’re not about fixing up DC - they’re about glorifying him personally.

In the same vein, he is probably incapable of truly caring about Harp as a person. His relationship with Harp is all about feeding his malignant narcissism and need to be worshipped. Yes - worshipped.

This overarching mentally ill need has predictable results: failure in whatever he pursues. Because his decision making is not rational. His thoughts are not strategic or even tactical. They are simply guided by his lizard brain’s need to sate his mental illness. Period.

So, we are stuck in a lost war that he can’t end and that is destroying our military because his lizard brain cannot find a way out that satisfies his sick requirements. We are stuck spending millions and even billions on vanity construction projects in the nation’s Capital while the cost of pretty much everything skyrockets. We are stuck focusing on illegal emoluments and crypto to enrich Trump and his family while his supporters and the rest of us deal with a struggling economy, the piling on of more national debt and the bankrupting of our country (as he has bankrupted nearly every other venture in his life. We are stuck watching Trump prostrate himself to dictators like Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping while making fools of ourselves to the rest of the world

Forget the juicy and potentially salacious details. Natalie Harp is just another symptom of a sick person who has failed at every venture he has ever undertaken (except, of course, being a fake successful business person on TV because he has faked it his whole life). She is just more evidence of the worst mistake this country has ever made: electing Donald Trump to be President.

Lap up the gossip and innuendo and salaciousness. But ignore the real meaning behind this bizarre pas de deux at your own peril: we are in deep trouble.
