Trump has ruined the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, like he’s ruined everything else. It was bad enough when a bunch of C-list bands were booked (who knew that Milli Vanilli was still a thing?) but even they have the sense that getting the stink of Trump on them isn’t worth whatever they were going to be paid for the gig. Now it’s going to be an almost certainly poorly attended MAGA rally, with Trump rambling and yelling for 90 minutes.

Also, look at this pile of shit. Is there anything he can’t fuck up?

My wife tells me that a bunch of MMA fighters have also decided not to attend whatever event is happening under the thunderdome being constructed on the White House lawn. She also tells me that ticket sales are so low that they’ve decided to let active military attend, but “no fatties” are allowed.

Our 250th was already going to be a troubling day for most of us because the freedom rhetoric is such a lie for the majority of the country. We live in an oppressive, authoritarian regime whose thugs murder its own citizens in broad daylight, starts stupid wars that kill thousands of innocents, and perverts the course of justice to snatch those who they consider undesirable off of the streets and detain them without trial. Trump just made it official.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, Trump will shuffle off this mortal coil to receive his eternal reward. But his enablers will still be around, and our job is to make sure that nobody forgets the stink that covers everyone who kissed his ass.

The title of the post is from a poem by Richard Hugo. It’s a great metaphor because “the last good kiss” is something you only know happened long after the fact. One assumes that when you experience something good, it’s not the last good thing that’s ever going to happen to you, so you only know it’s the “last good kiss” after you realize that there are no more kisses coming. I think that we’re all coming to the realization that the best 4th celebration — the last good kiss, if you will — happened a while ago. The job of the resistance in this country is to make sure that this 4th isn’t really the last good 4th.
