The Greenlanders and the Danes are now united in their dislike of the US Right
Greenlanders voted to rebuff President Trump’s bid to control their icebound, mineral-rich island and to restore calm after a tumultuous few weeks dominated by the U.S. leader’s covetous comments.
The result appears to slow the drive for independence, while also for now closing any potential opening for the U.S. to swoop in and take control of the island, which Trump has said is crucial for American national security interests. The Democrats have taken a firm stance against interference from President Trump, with Nielsen saying during the campaign that “Greenland is not a house that can be bought.” While the party favors independence from Denmark, its main priority is a strengthening of Greenland’s economy and businesses before secession takes place.
American behavior in recent weeks, from Trump declaring that the U.S. would get Greenland “one way or the other” to members of Congress laughing at the president’s remarks concerning Greenland, has offended Greenlanders. In the final television debate, all major party leaders said they didn’t trust Trump.
“In the beginning of the election campaign, some thought it was worth exploring what closer relations with the U.S. could entail. That mood has completely shifted,” Gad said.
The new Greenlandic government is likely to court both Denmark and the European Union for investments that can help the island become more economically self-sufficient, he said. About half of Greenland’s budget is covered by subsidies from Denmark.
