Some Rare But Welcome Good News

A win for the Republicans' designated scapegoat

Yesterday, this happened:

Republicans called it the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act.” Democrats dubbed it “The GOP Child Predator Empowerment Act”. The Senate clerk said it didn’t have the votes.

With that, Senate Democrats have once again staved off federal legislation that would effectively ban trans women in women’s sports.

The vote was split exactly on party lines following its passage in the majority-Republican House in January. Democratic Senators Elissa Slotkin of Michigan and Peter Welch of Vermont, as well as Republicans Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia and Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, did not vote for reasons unknown.

Just be clear, the bill failed a cloture vote 51-45, meaning in essence that it was filibustered. Utter idiot Tommy Tuberville had sponsored the bill and posted on Xitter that the issue was “men competing in women’s sports”.

Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski again showed their true colors by voting for cloture. As usual, their mouth noises and their votes diverged, drastically. It’s going to be a long, circuitous path before either of them decides to break with Trump.

I have no illusions that this will be the end of the war on trans folk, but the “women in sports” non-issue, something that can be handled by the governing bodies of sports rather than the governing bodies of the nation, is probably the best chance that Republicans had to become the potty police, and it’s dead, at least for now. And that’s something to celebrate.
