Shameless
...or not?
I’d argue that perhaps the most critical superpower that Trump and those in his administration have is their lack of shame. The last day has provided us with a perfect example of this as well as an example that miught show some cracks in their facade.
First, the retribution. From the Wall Street Journal:
Justice Department Officials Race to Charge James Comey as Deadline Looms
Prosecutors are moving forward days after President Trump ousted U.S. attorney who voiced doubts about charging former FBI director
Justice Department officials are racing to obtain criminal charges this week against former FBI Director James Comey, according to people familiar with the matter, escalating President Trump’s unprecedented efforts to prosecute his political foes.
Prosecutors are preparing to seek an indictment of Comey from a federal grand jury in Virginia as soon as Thursday, the people said, in a case involving allegations that he lied during 2020 congressional testimony concerning the bureau’s earlier investigation of Trump’s connections to Russian interference in the 2016 election. The statute of limitations on such a case runs out next week.
Now don’t get me wrong. Comey is a smarmy, holier-than-thou know-it-all who cost Hillary the election in 2016 (yes, see this link: The Comey Letter Probably Cost Clinton The Election | FiveThirtyEight) and gave us Trump 1.0. Karma is a bitch. Nonetheless, while he should be shunned and have his breach of protocol hung over his head for the rest of his life, Comey doesn’t deserve to be prosecuted for any BS charges they come up with (sounds like they’ll be going with “lying to Congress”).

Second, earlier this month, the notorious Ed Martin, who was too radical even for MAGA to be confirmed as Washington DC US Attorney, but who is now a top DOJ official and director of the Justice Department's Weaponization Working Group, announced in a letter his intentions to investigate potential wrongdoing by the FBI agent who rushed in to rescue children during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Looks like Martin was aiming to protect Alex Jones.
DOJ official ordered to rescind inquiry to FBI agent who sued Alex Jones: Sources
A top Justice Department official sent a letter earlier this month to the attorney for an FBI agent who was among the first to respond to the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School suggesting he could be under criminal investigation for taking part in the defamation trial of conspiracy theorist and "Infowars" host Alex Jones.
Today, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche ordered Martin to withdraw his letter and cease his investigation. Is it possible that investigating one of the first responders to Sandy Hook was too much even for those with no shame? Couple that with Disney’s snap decision to return Kimmel to the air last night and one thing is clear: public opinion - and public action - still matter. If we are going to get through Trump 2.0 (and that is absolutely in doubt), it will be pulbic opinion, mobilization and action that makes the difference.
So even when things seem hopeless, we cannot stop doing all the things each of us has the power to do - big or small. This is the Way.
