Right wing Democrats gather in DC to bash Left wing Democrats

Democrats are still staring down bleak polling numbers about their party’s brand, even as President Donald Trump’s favorability also has dropped. The answer to Democrats’ troubles at WelcomeFest, the moderate Democrats’ Coachella, include: purity tests are toxic, being unpopular on the social media site Bluesky is cool and winning again means running to the center.

That’s the gospel speakers preached on stage Wednesday in the basement of a Washington, D.C., hotel, where hundreds of centrist elected officials, candidates and operatives gathered to commiserate over the 2024 election results and chart their version of the path forward for the Democratic Party.

“There’s a hunger for people to work together, to try to find solutions and to talk in common sense terms,” said Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), who won a much-heralded special election in 2024 by calling out his own party on immigration policies.

“I think that there’s a lot more elected officials that are willing to speak up about that because they don’t want to lose,” Suozzi told reporters after his appearance.

Wednesday’s daylong conference, which represented a who’s-who of center-left Democratic politics, from analytics guru David Shor to Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin to New York Rep. Ritchie Torres, was the latest sign that moderate Democrats believe they are ascendant in the party, looking to influence its posture heading into the 2026 midterms and 2028 presidential primary.

Richie Torres endorsed serial sexual harasser and Trump acolyte Cuomo so I guess womens rights are going under the centrist bus along with every other (supposed) “Democratic value”.

But the rifts within the Democratic Party are still evident. Speakers railed against progressive groups like Justice Democrats, Our Revolution and Indivisible, who they said forced the party into unwinnable positions — and weren’t focused on winning majorities.

It’s so easy to be a centrist -everything, everything is negotiable. Here are the Reasonable Centrists laughing at the young pro Palestinian protestors who somehow managed to breach the security at this lobbyist-funded event :

And like any other Democratic event in 2025, WelcomeFest was interrupted by protesters, who shouted at Torres during his interview. They were played off by the producers of the event, who blasted Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.”

because ethnic cleansing, war crimes and 20,000 slaughtered Palestinian children are just a joke to these DC sophisticates. I guess defending US law, international law and opposition to ethnic cleansing is too politically risky for them. So much for all that!

ELON MUSK has been the Democratic Party’s boogeyman since shortly after President DONALD TRUMP deputized him as a top adviser.

A few Democrats are eager to welcome Musk, who said he voted for former President JOE BIDEN in 2020 and gave a tour of SpaceX to then-President BARACK OBAMA, back into the fold.

Rep. RO KHANNA (D-Calif.), who represents Silicon Valley and has known Musk for over a decade, said Democrats should “be in a dialogue” with Musk, given their shared opposition to the GOP’s megabill.

“We should ultimately be trying to convince him that the Democratic Party has more of the values that he agrees with,” Khanna said. “A commitment to science funding, a commitment to clean technology, a commitment to seeing international students like him.”

Other Democrats are warming back up to Musk as he leaves the White House and starts to break with his former boss in ways that could benefit the opposition.

“I’m a believer in redemption, and he is telling the truth about the legislation,” said Rep. RITCHIE TORRES (D-N.Y.). But, he added, Musk has “done an enormous amount of damage” and “there are Democrats who see his decimation of the federal workforce and the federal government as an unforgivable sin.”

LIAM KERR, co-founder of the group behind the centrist Democrats’ WelcomeFest meeting today in Washington, said “of course” Democrats should, ahem, welcome Musk back into the party.

The absolute cynicism of these people amazes me. They go out and tell their base to organize to oppose Musk and Trump - “you go get ‘em,, I’ll hold your coat!” WHILE meeting with operatives and lobbyists and preparing to “welcome” Musk into the Democratic Party.

I watched a Tik Tok of ordinary people in Southside Chicago facing down ICE yesterday - big (delightful!) mob, men women, children, all out protecting their neighbors from Trump’s masked thugs, risking arrest and attacks from the brownshirts. Our base is so much braver and better than our leaders.
