I’m back in my Dakota hometown and let me tell you, the fireworks have gotten longer and louder every year. It’s not the “official” celebration, it’s freelancers. The volunteer firefighters might have a busy night.

I have some anecdata from my 95 year-old dad, a long-time Democrat who was active for many years, knocking on doors, county chair, etc. He brought up “the young woman who beat a 15 term congresswoman” in Denver. His take was that it was a good thing — he thought it was about time that we let young people take over. So not all old folks are bitter about the natural progression from older to younger in the Democratic Party.

When I last saw him, he was hate watching the Trump 250th, pointing out the craziness of Trump’s crowd count (100K). Apparently Trump is running against “communism” - a winning strategy in the 50’s. Trump’s excuse for his relatively small crowd is that they had to evacuate the National Mall because of the threat of thunderstorms. Of course, his MAGA fans took that in stride:

The right thing to do would have been to issue them all umbrellas, have them stand out in the most open area of the Mall, and let nature take its course.
