The big primary news from last night was Paxton’s blow out win over Cornyn. Another Texas result was 38 year-old Christian Menefee handily beating Al Green (78) in the primary for TX-18. That district went 77-22 for Harris last cycle, and the Houston area had seen two older black electeds die in office, so why Menefee needed to take $4 million from crypto interests to beat Green is something I wonder about.
Speaking of some interesting moves, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, who took a hit during re-districting, has decided to run in the primary in plurality black FL-23. It may well be that the Democrats will be rid of her constantly disappointing presence after this election. Another interesting note from Florida is that Fredrica Wilson, the 83-year-old incumbent in FL-24, is denying reports that she’s going to retire, even though sources say she’s been calling around telling folks that she’s retiring. My wife tells me that grip strength is an indicator of longevity, so apparently Rep Wilson will be living a long fucking time, considering how well she’s hanging on to that seat.
All of the above comes from the indispensable Downballot site.
Moving on to my new home state, Colorado, the state Democratic Party is sponsoring “Demfest” on June 6 in Denver. It’s a candidate forum, but the two incumbents who are facing challengers, Rep Diana DeGette (CO-1) and Sen John Hickenlooper, are notable by their absence. Their opponents will be there. The only federal office holder in attendance will be Sen Michael Bennet, who is running for governor against state AG Phil Weiser.
If you’re scared of taking questions from the base, as DeGette and Hickenlooper appear to be, then why don’t you consider retiring? I find this lack of presence disrespectful in the extreme to the kinds of people who show up for candidate forums. These people are the potential canvassers and phone bankers that Democrats need.
Speaking of Bennet and his run for governor, I saw an attack ad going after his opponent Weiser for not joining some lawsuit against the Trump administration. Well, Bennet voted to confirm a bunch of Trump appointees. Here’s the fact-check on the ad, which is about lawsuits in Trump’s first term, which it doesn’t point out. Also, Weiser wasn’t AG until 2019. Bennet is engaging in the time-honored practice of political projection if he had anything to do with the ad. From what I’ve seen, my vote is going to Weiser, not Bennet.
Of course, our useless jackass Governor Jared Polis won’t be showing his face. He’s too busy pouting over the (deserved) shit he’s taken from his commutation of the sentence of election denier Tina Peters.
The privilege and entitlement of mediocre rich rich dudes is apparently limitless.
