New York State of Mind
Cuomo and Hochul are not the best we can do
I got this fundraising email yesterday:

I am not named Susan, just FYI. This came to my “real” email address.
Hochul’s next election is in 2026. She’s weak. Her 2022 campaign was awful and she barely eked out a win. She had no coattails. I don’t think Elise Stefanik or Mike Lawler can beat her, but it could be closer than anyone thinks.
Andrew Cuomo has won the media contest for Mayor of New York already, and a number of unions have endorsed him, because he’s vindictive, but Tish James, the Attorney General who investigated him, has not:
Leading chants of “Mayor! Adrienne!” at a major union endorsement rally on Wednesday, New York Attorney General Letitia James stole some wind from the sails of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s inevitability campaign.
Cuomo has been dominant in attracting major endorsements in the race for New York City mayor. Influential unions including 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council have in recent weeks backed the former governor, who’s polling with double-digit leads above any of his competitors.
But District Council 37 – New York City’s largest public sector union that represents 150,000 members – broke up that pattern this week, endorsing New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. The nod gave her campaign a much-needed boost and one that offered her endorsers plenty of opportunity to take aim at the former governor.
The union endorsed Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani as their second choice and state Sen. Zellnor Myrie as their third. In addition to James, Adams was also endorsed by CWA Local 1180 and Unite Here Local 100.
Zohran Mamdami is typically second in mayoral primary polls. He’s endorsed by the DSA and they’ve got the goal of knocking on a million doors to get him elected. Since New York City now has ranked choice voting, a strategic vote ranking other candidates and not ranking Cuomo could lead to Mr. Inevitable failing.
James has also endorsed Harvey Epstein in the Manhattan Council District 2 race, the one where Anthony Weiner is running. Maybe her strategy is to not endorse creeps and/or sex pests.
Ross Barkan’s piece on the return of Cuomo is well worth a read. “One way to understand Cuomo is Trump with intellect and discipline.” Ugh.
