I have to say that the loss of 60 Minutes is awful, but we knew Weiss would get around to it sooner or later, so I’m looking for some evidence of integrity and also for a little comedy. Scott Pelley being one of the few establishment media figures who stood up for his peers is a bright spot. The comedy is how the incompetent toady she hired to run 60 Minutes, Nick Bilson, immediately went all “I’m calling HR” by accusing Pelley of creating a “hostile work environment” because he pushed back against the bullshit that Bilson was spewing at an all-hands meeting. As usual with the MAGA media types, they’re the toughest hombres around when they’re shitting on others, while being the biggest victims when faced with even the mildest criticism of their actions. Pelley, to his credit, is still out there firing back at Bari Weiss’ bullshit, as Weiss is trying to spin yet another act of abject fealty to her billionaire keepers as some kind of smart editorial judgment.

Moving on, I’m sure we’re all going to breathe a sigh of relief upon learning the that White House Correspondents Dinner will still be happening. Total establishment tool Weijia Jang is making sure that Trump will have an opportunity to give a “losers and haters” speech on July 24. Since Trump hasn’t been seen in public for a week, you’d think the supine stenographers that populate Jang’s organization might take a wee break from uncritically transcribing everything told to them in press briefings. However, a quick perusal of both the Times and the Post shows that other, more important things are occupying their front pages:

Bari Weiss made the front pages of both of those papers, by the way.

Jamelle Bouie is the only good opinion columnist at the Times, and he has a good piece today, so here’s Cheryl Rofer’s gift link if you want to read it. He’s thinking the various “Project 2029” efforts by different organizations and they’re all too incremental for him. He doesn’t use the term, but I like the idea of a “Third Reconstruction”, where the first was the post-Civil War one, and the second was the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. Anyway, Bouie’s metaphor, borrowed from Lincoln, that “broken eggs can’t be mended” is the right attitude about this era, and it applies as much to the institution of journalism in the US as it does to our other failed institutions.
