There are many more important things to write about, but I’d like to take a moment to consider this letter to the editor published by the Columbus Dispatch, and re-printed in USA Today. It’s gotten a lot of attention:
I recently entered the online dating scene and have met nice women for Columbus-area lunches or dinners in the process. After I thanked one, I got a thanks back with an additional note:
“I never asked you about your political views. I have no problem with Republicans, but if you are a MAGA Republican, it would be difficult for us to develop a friendship."
Wow. That comment threw me for a loop, but it made me reflect on the bitter divisions within the country. It is literally a civil war.
After that felony misuse of “literally”, he goes on to whine and moan about the reasonable request from his date. You can read the whole thing, but the gist is that Democrats are uncivil, but we also need to all get along, but also Trump is pretty swell except for a couple of things. It reeks of Fox News Grandpa Syndrome: TDS, DEI, “woke”, trans girls in sports, etc. The writer, a retired professor of some health-related discipline, also blames Biden for issues with the COVID vaccine, which as we know was a key 2020 Biden Administration project.
Anyway, I hope the author of the letter doesn’t ever visit the women dating over forty subreddit, because he might stroke out over what the women there are saying. These women are mad at a lot of things about modern dating, and they try to support each other in their quest to avoid all the ugliness that comes with trying to find a decent partner when you’re over 40. This includes:
“Hobosexuals” — guys who can’t really support themselves and try to move in and mooch at the earliest opportunities.
Men looking for “a nurse with a purse” — older men in poor physical health without a lot of financial resources who want a woman to cook, clean and pay the bills.
Liars of all stripes, and the lying is pretty awful.
Guys with poor hygiene, out of shape and badly dressed, who think they deserve to be with gorgeous, fit women.
But, above all, these women are trying to suss out MAGA supporters as soon as possible. It’s simply disqualifying: the men know it, so they lie about it. I think our letter writer above knew it, too, so he avoided talking politics, but she sniffed it out. This is him, by the way:
Some people on Bluesky made fun of this guy’s appearance, but he looks pretty good compared to some of the profiles I’ve seen on the subreddit. He has his teeth (or dentures), he can trim his moustache, no visible nose hair, and he’s had a haircut in the last month. In addition to writing letters to the editor, Mr Robinson is also a (self) published author on Amazon. One book, Hybrid Hysteria, is a thriller about a priest/scientist who investigates the possiblity that lithium batteries are being used to sterilize liberals. Another of his books is the totally not-creepy-sounding Bow Tie Sex: A Serious Scientific Study. 🤮 🤮 🤮 🤮
Back to dating in general: the consensus on the women dating over forty subreddit is that most of the good men who are single due to divorce or death of a spouse aren’t even part of the online dating world. Instead, the women in their social networks connect them to a good woman who was divorced or widowed. So a man in his 50s or 60s who’s using dating apps is already suspect. Being MAGA is the kiss of death. MAGA hates women, so why would a woman want to date a man who belongs to a women-hating cult?
If you’re a Fox News Grandpa and you want a date, it’s probably best to join a really conservative evangelical church. Otherwise you might have to venture out of your little Fox bubble and get schooled.
