Know Your Rights

This is a public service announcement

You know they were just waiting to do this:

The FBI on Friday arrested a judge whom the agency accused of obstruction after it said she helped a man evade US immigration authorities as they were seeking to arrest him at her courthouse.

The county circuit judge, Hannah Dugan, was apprehended in the courthouse where she works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at 8.30am local time on Friday on charges of obstruction, a spokesperson for the US Marshals Service confirmed to the Guardian.

Kash Patel, the Trump-appointed FBI director, wrote on X: “We believe Judge Dugan intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject to be arrested in her courthouse, Eduardo Flores Ruiz, allowing the subject – an illegal alien – to evade arrest.”

He said that agents were still able to arrest the target after he was “chased down” and that he was in custody. Patel added that “the judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public”.

Here’s the complaint. [pdf]. The gist of it is that Flores Ruiz was appearing in Dugan’s courtroom on a domestic violence charge. A bunch of feds were there also, to arrest him as an undocumented immigrant. Dugan confronted them, and they presented an administrative warrant. Dugan then, according to the charges, spirited him out of the courtroom. According to this know your rights site, you’re not required to do what an administrative warrant says unless it is accompanied by a federal court order. The complaint acknowledges that Dugan asked the agents whether it was an administrative warrant before she did what she is accused of doing.

Dugan is an elected county judge. Formerly, she was the head of Catholic Charities in Milwaukee, and before that she worked for legal aid. She’s definitely the kind of person who would piss off a bunch of ICE thugs.

I’m not a lawyer but here’s a former federal judge:

Pam Bondi ran to the cameras to say that “no one is above the law” to justify this arrest. Of course, that’s a crock of shit. Bondi’s Justice Department has been evading the law for the last couple of months with the most flimsy pretexts and delaying tactics possible.

As usual with these fascists, they want to be protected by the law but not bound by it, and they want their victims to be bound by it but not protected.

This is part of the next step of the Trump/Stephen Miller plan: discredit judges. An ex-judge in New Mexico was also arrested yesterday on charges of sheltering Tren de Aragua members, while the ex-judge says he examined their papers and accepted them as tenants because he believed they were in the US legally. Every Venezuelan with a tattoo is a Tren de Aragua member, according to ICE.

Every federal agent and attorney involved with these two arrests needs to be on the list of people who will be investigated when Democrats get back in power. Otherwise, this will just happen again the next time voters grab the wheel and put the car back in the ditch.
