DEFIANCE, Ohio — A migrant woman held at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio has remained in custody for more than six weeks after a judge granted her release, prompting county officials to intervene during a recent board meeting.
he issue surfaced nearly ten months after CCNO’s governing board approved a contract allowing the regional jail to house U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees.
During the board’s most recent meeting, Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken told fellow members that the woman had been granted a path toward release by a judge, contingent on completing biometric testing required by ICE.
However, CCNO does not collect biometrics, leaving the woman unable to meet the court’s condition and stuck in detention.
“I’m asking, how can you help?” Gerken told the board. “What are you committed to do today to get this test done?”
Board members agreed to assist by arranging transportation so the woman could complete the required testing at another facility.
CCNO (Corrections Center of NW Ohio) is a jail funded and operated to serve five NW Ohio counties. Lucas County is Toledo, and also the most liberal county so no surprise a Lucas County commissioner stepped up.
The news article is incomplete however - the detained women had already had biometrics recorded - it’s just that the overpaid, mean-spirited Trump acolytes at ICE refused to turn that info over to the jail- because they’re nasty, petty people, just like the corrupt real estate huckster they serve.
The heroes here were a group I have written about before - DEEDS, in Defiance Ohio. DEEDS is a Lefty org that is adjacent to the local Dem Party but not a part of it. They launched a program to contact prisoners of ICE in CCNO, ask them about their situation and offer assistance. They pass information along to prisoner’s families, fund phone calls out of the jail so prisoners can contact friends and family and, in this case, actually freed this woman.
There will be lots and lots of elite institutional failures during the Trump Regime - we’ve already seen lawyers, colleges, the military and media completely capitulate, but there will also be scrappy underdog heroes. DEEDS is one of them.
