Gulag Master Comes to Town

Openly defying a court order and promising more.

I saw part of the gross spectacle in the Oval Office this morning, where the President of El Salvador, and jail keeper for the US, Nayib Bukele openly thumbed his nose at the US courts:

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele said Monday that he does not plan to return to Kilmar Abrego García to the United States. “How can I return him to the United States?” Bukele asked Monday during a meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office. “I smuggle him into the United States? Of course I’m not going to do it.” He made the comments a day after the Justice Department told a federal judgethat it isn’t required to bring home the Maryland resident, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador. Since Bukele struck a deal with Trump’s administration, he has accepted more than 200 Venezuelans deported from the U.S. in recent months and housed them in his country’s draconian mega-prison. Later Monday, Trump is scheduled to welcome the Ohio State football team to the White House to celebrate its 2025 national championship.

That last sentence is just chef’s kiss showing how the DC press is covering this.

The part of the event that I saw featured Stephen Miller, who I must say is looking less human every day, lying about the latest court order. The Trump team cherry picks one sentence about executive power over deportation and ignores the rest of these orders, which clearly tell them to bring Kilmar Abrego García back to the US.

We’re far beyond a “constitutional crisis” into the territory of sheer authoritarian rule, and the sad fact is that very few Americans know or care, and Democrats have been pretty quiet about the whole thing. Perhaps this will wake someone up:

Holy shit. Video posted by President Bukele’s team on X shows the moments before his press conference with Trump in which Trump tells him: “We want to do homegrown criminals next. You gotta build about five more places.” (h/t @titonka.bsky.social @michelekelemen.bsky.social)

Update: Of course as soon as I sent this, I saw the following. Good. More CODELs to the gulags, please:

Letter from Dem Senator Chris Van Hollen (MD) requesting a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele To discuss MD father Kilmar Abrego Garcia's return "If Kilmar is not home by midweek – I plan to travel to El Salvador this week to check on his condition and discuss his release."
