Some Democrats want to cave but the rest don’t and that’s flummoxing Republicans

David Dayen at the American Prospect has a piece that says the following:

  1. There are roughly 10 Democratic Senators who are willing to stop the shutdown for a flimsy promise from Republicans.

  2. Schumer basically agrees with them.

  3. When this plan was presented to the rest of the Democratic caucus, they went ballistic, so instead Schumer floated the ask for one year of ACA subsidies.

This is the part that interested me — the other stuff was kind of what I imagined.

Informed observers tell me that the obvious compromise deal, which would allow each side to claim a partial victory, is either a shorter extension of the ACA subsidies for less than a year, or an extention with a partial cut at higher incomes. It remains to be seen whether both sides can get to yes.

At this point, the Democrats either have to get something, or let Trump pressure the Republicans into abolishing the filibuster and pass their “Clean CR” which will include a while bunch of awful shit, I’m sure. A compromise that would have people’s insurance costs go way up in July is almost certainly going to lead to another extension since it would be such a potent campaign issue, so a year or six months isn’t really that important, as far as I’m concerned.

Building on Kay’s post about young people getting together socially as part of the Mamdani campaign, and Joe’s post about the Trump Administration being monsters, here’s Kat Abughazaleh explaining the best way to help food banks (give money) and challenging her primary opponents to donate campaign funds to food banks in the district, as she is.

Until the end of the government shutdown, our campaign will be donating $2,500 a month to a food pantry in the Ninth District. And to my fellow candidates, I challenge you to do the same:

Doing some genuine good to offset the work of monsters should be something all Democratic campaigns should be thinking about, and doing.
