Epstein Update
A lot happened yesterday
I’m not going to link to the dozens of DC insider sheets and brain-dead major media that breathlessly reported that Trump “reversed course” on the Epstein files and now welcomes their release. (Here’s his “truth” if you missed it.) One of the following will happen:
Pam Bondi will suddenly grow some for-show legal ethics and refuse to release documents from an ongoing investigation (of only the Democrats in the files).
Bondi, Patel and others have finished their redaction of the files and what’s going to be released will be devoid of any evidence against Trump.
Thune will filibuster the bill, or not even bring it to the floor, and it will die in the Senate without enough Republican votes.
I’ve always thought that the end game here was somebody in the DoJ leaking the entire, unredacted file.
Moving on to the political fallout, The Down Ballot has the latest on the special election in “safe” TN-07.
Third-party groups are about to deploy serious sums to boost Republican Matt Van Epps against Democrat Aftyn Behn ahead of the Dec. 2 election for Tennessee’s dark-red 7th District, Axios reports—a showdown the publication says is “scaring” the GOP.
To assuage those worries, Alex Isenstadt writes that a group called Conservatives for American Excellence will spend $600,000 on commercials for the remaining two weeks of the race, while the hardline Club for Growth will also launch a “six-figure” ad buy.
The news came the same day that Behn’s allies launched a $300,000 campaign arguing that putting Van Epps in Congress would prevent the public from ever knowing the truth about convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Here’s the ad. It’s a minorpiece of classic political ads, and I say that with some respect.
So we’ll see how the Republican base reacts to the trick that wimpy legislators love to pull: “I voted for the bill but some other thing stopped the thing I voted for from happening.” I have a feeling that MTG kind of has her finger on the MAGA pulse and the crazy core of the party wants to see those damn files.
Also, it’s unclear to me that when the mainstream media ever starts doing their job, that the emails aren’t really damaging on their own. Take as an example the absolutely brutal job that the students at the Harvard Crimson did on Larry Summers:
When former Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers was pursuing a romantic relationship with a woman he described as a mentee, he sought guidance from a longtime associate: convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein.
The “mentee” was a Chinese economics scholar for whom Epstein and Summers used the codename “peril”.
