Continuing Resolution Update

House is strong, Senate is shrug emoji

The Republicans are trying to leverage the Democrats so their highly-MAGA, unclean Continuing Resolution will pass. TPM has a good backgrounder on the bill. Key points are that Trump and Johnson are both whipping Republicans to pass the bill without Democratic votes, which Jeffries has pledged to withhold. Then there’s this:

If the stopgap Johnson is pushing for passes the lower chamber, GOP leaders are, reportedly, likely to cancel votes for the rest of the week and send members home early, according to two people who talked to Politico.

That’s, of course, a calculated move from Johnson and House GOP leadership that would put the Senate, specifically Senate Democrats, under pressure, forcing them to go with the CR text House passed.

Any effort from the Senate to try and amend the stopgap and send it back to the House could risk a government shutdown, as the lower chamber will be out of session the rest of the week and the money runs out late Friday night.

TPM is also keeping track of Democratic Senators’ positions on the CR, and most of them haven’t committed. Fetterman’s a “yes” — there’s hardly anything too Trumpy for that empty hoodie to vote for. (If he votes — he’s missed a lot of votes this year.)

Rep Rosa DeLauro (D-CT-3) and Sen Patty Murray have released an alternative clean CR that would just fund the government for another month or so. If they can get this to the floor of the House for a vote (which would only happen if the Johnson/Trump plan fails), then this would give everyone a quick way to kick the can down the road for another month. (Oops, I meant “negotiate a real budget”.)

Ezra Levin of Indivisible has a long briefing post on the showdown and Indivisible’s position. They think a CR should leverage getting Musk out of government and Dems should force a shutdown over that issue. Their recommendation for action is to call your federal electeds and, if they’re Democrats, tell them to screw their courage to the sticking place, and if they’re Republicans, tell them to hold town halls.

While we’re on the topic of Senators and their votes, this ain’t great:

17 Democrats just voted to confirm Trump's anti-labor Labor Secretary. If we have a constitutional crisis (we do), they should start acting like it. www.senate.gov/legislative/...

I don’t remember a time when the Democratic base and the Democrats in DC were so far apart. I have to believe that if you asked an average somewhat engaged Democratic voter, they’d say that Democrats shouldn’t support any Trump appointees, given how shitty they are.
