Now, they are shedding that persona. The Nordics have emerged as a model for Europe’s defense. They are leading efforts to reverse decades of military drawdowns to counter both Russian aggression and uncertain security guarantees from the Trump White House.

The four main Nordic countries are among Europe’s top donors of military aid to Ukraine by population, and have taken steps to usher in a new regional security architecture that’s less reliant on the U.S.

Any Nordic country would struggle to militarily square up to Russia on its own. But combined, the Nordics have an economy about the size of Mexico’s, and nearly the same size as Russia’s. Following Sweden and Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, they have pooled some of their forces.

Sweden boasts an advanced defense industry that makes submarines, battle tanks and supersonic jet fighters. Norway possesses maritime surveillance and fighting capabilities in the Arctic. Finland has one of the largest standing armies and artillery forces per capita in Europe. And Denmark’s special forces have decades of experience deploying to some of the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan and Iraq to fight American wars. (The fifth Nordic country, Iceland, has no standing army or defense industry).

“You have a regional grouping with the economic and resource potential to develop a fully integrated defense-industrial base like Germany has, but with a completely different kind of threat perception and political will,” said Eric Ciaramella, senior fellow in the Russia and Eurasia program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank and former senior U.S. intelligence analyst.

I can only speak to my experiences in Denmark, but in my opinion Danes never considered themselves as relegated to “cozy living” and “peace efforts”. Danes think they are a couple of steps removed from Vikings and it looks like that is turning out to be more true than not.

Heaven help me for taking the following line of "reasoning"...

The fact that the all the countries in question are "stepping up" in terms of defense spending/profile is exactly what Hair Furor's wanted since the first term. Everything with that bastard comes down to "me pay less, you foot the bill" and that extends to this.

The perspective has been the US security umbrella is paid for by...the US. He's wanted to change basically the entire post-WW2 security arrangement at all levels, but mainly at the "make those Euro-Soshulists PAY MOAR!!!!!" level.

Longtime foreign policy people on both sides of the aisle obviously think this is awful for a variety of reasons, one being it's been a longstanding Russian goal to fragment a western alliance that's survived all these years because there was always one big-time funder, the USofA, willing to spend what it takes when the time comes.

Norway has been a big consumer of Lockheed Martin fighter jets and other U.S. military hardware. They have massive wealth from oil revenues which are managed by their sovereign fund. I think Norway will move more of its defense acquisitions to European / Scandinavian companies. I’m kicking myself for not emigrating to Norway when I had the chance.

"This" to your last paragraph; I can't speak for them either, but I think "Peacenik Scandinavian Hippie" owes more to American stereotypes than to reality, especially given the eagerness to believe that socialist economics make people weak, soft, and decadent.

The Nordic countries haven't made themselves famous fighting wars lately simply because they haven't had to, and aren't stupid enough to involve themselves in Iraq style boondoggles just to sell flag-themed merchandise. Even so, it's not like they've been asleep at the wheel: Norway, Denmark, and Iceland were always NATO members, Sweden wasn't but, as the article alludes to, has always had its own advanced defense industry to make up for its lack of formal allies. They build fighter jets, for crying out loud! When was the last time Canada did that, or Australia, or Turkey?

I think its because so much public good is coded as "feminine" in the US, so Americans see the Nordic safety net and think "girly and weak!" Because anything female coded =weak. We're really a misogynist country.

One of the worst coded words is pussy. It was perfect when Betty White decoded it (even though she never actually said this):

Why do people say, “Grow some balls”? Balls are weak and sensitive. If you really wanna get tough, grow a vagina. Those things really take a pounding.
