Let’s start with Jared Polis, supposed Democrat, actual glibertarian numpty and freeze peach enthusiast:
DENVER — Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) commuted the sentence of Tina Peters on Friday afternoon.
The former Republican Mesa County Clerk was serving a nearly nine-year sentence for her role in allowing unauthorized access to her county's election equipment in an attempt to uncover election fraud.
Polis commuted her sentence to four-and-a-half years and said she would be eligible for parole next month. Before Polis' commutation, Peters' earliest parole date would have been March 2028.
The Colorado Court of Appeals threw out Peters’ sentence in April, but upheld her convictions. Democrats in the state legislature were told Polis would wait to act on Peters' clemency until the appeals court decision. The appeals court sent her case back to Mesa County District Court for Peters to be resentenced because they said the sentence was based, in part, on improper consideration of her right to exercise free speech during her trial.
In an interview with 9NEWS' Kyle Clark, Polis said he commuted her sentence because he felt she was oversentenced for expressing inaccurate, but constitutionally protected views.
"She committed a crime. What's an issue here is how long the sentence is," Polis said. “I agree with the appeals court that in the sentencing hearing, the judge incorrectly looked at and considered her bizarre viewpoints, her speech, and held her speech against her.”
I would like to engage in a thought experiment. Assume a rapist said, a number of times, during his trial, “you know, the way she dressed, she had it coming.” Would his constitutionally protected speech have earned him clemency from Gov Polis if the rapist got a harsher than average sentence due to his lack of remorse? I’m thinking the answer is “fuck no”. Tina Peters was as unrepentant as our imaginary rapist, but she gets a big old pass. Also, the lying is just so fucking typical of these arrogant, shitty governors. What would it have hurt to wait for her re-sentencing? Polis — a clown, a fool — is so eager to suck up to Trump that he rushed out Peters’ clemency with the rest of those he announced yesterday. He could have waited. She wasn’t going anywhere, obviously.
I guess at this point that Coloradans, including, unfortunately, me, will have to just deal with the rest of Polis’ term. We’ll also have to deal with the inevitability that Trump will, rightly, judge him as a weakling and want to get more concessions from him.
Moving on — Abagail Spanberger:
Virginia’s Democratic governor, Abigail Spanberger, vetoed a bill on Thursday that would have restored collective bargaining rights for 50,000 public sector workers in the state. Union leaders say the veto is a “betrayal” and “slap in the face” after the governor campaigned last year on promises to restore collective bargaining rights.
Though majorities in both chambers of Virginia’s general assembly passed legislation that would restore bargaining rights to most public sector workers, Spanberger introduced an amended version of the bill last month that was eventually rejected by the assembly.
According to an analysis from the Economic Policy Institute, Spanberger’s amended bill so heavily weakened the collective bargaining rights initially passed by the general assembly that it would “lock Virginia into an unstable, ineffective system in which collective bargaining would remain merely ‘optional’”.
If you want to know why there’s a giant consultant-industrial complex dedicated to shitting on the left, the reason is that politicians like Spanberger want to do their dirty work without consequence. The reason that Virginia is purple or blue is because of the growth of the area near DC, which is full of government employees who will vote for Democrats as if their lives depended on it. Spanberger’s reward to these loyal voters is to be sure they don’t have collective bargaining rights. But she feels totally secure doing that because those voters didn’t have a choice in the primary. Plus, she’s term-limited, so this is her one shot, which she had better count for her future as either a centrist Presidential candidate or a DC consultant.
Both Polis and Spanberger are following a rich Democratic tradition of betraying the supposed ideals of their party for whatever short-term personal gain they can attain. No wonder the Democratic Party is polling lower than whale shit with “leaders” like this.
