Backing Acton

Last night I attended a (virtual) meeting. The Ohio Dem county chairs met with the Amy Acton campaign to share information. I am not a Dem county chair but I know one, and he sends me invites to meetings I might be interested in.

Dr. Acton is running for the Dem gubernatorial nomination in Ohio. Acton was the former state health director during the worst of the covid pandemic.

The meeting kicked off with David Pepper. Pepper is something of a star in D politics in Ohio - smart as a whip and a good talker. He came out gangbusters for Acton, showing us polling that has Ramaswamy with VERY high unfavorables. Ramaswamy is a horrible, slick practiced liar so it doesn’t surprise me that 45% of Ohioans already hate him although the Ohio Republicans cleared the path to the nomination for him and he has a shitload of money. The only people Ramaswamy is really popular with are the MAGA base. If this surprises you, it shouldn’t. You must have noticed that Trump has surrounded himself with far-Right people of color. It’s called “owning the libs on racism” and the MAGA faithful love it.

Pepper also said that Acton will be on the ticket with Sherrod so if it’s a good year for Dems she’ll benefit from Sherrod’s statewide campaign. True, I think.

Pepper says we have a shot because Ramaswamy is already disliked, and this is without any opposition. Seems reasonable!

Acton spoke and promised she would come out strong for public education. I care about that a lot and ALSO think it is a very good issue for Dems. Dr. Acton is the perfect person for this because she came up poor and public schools “saved her life”. Obviously, she went on to become a physician, so good job, Amy.

Personally, I think Acton is talented as a politician. There is something very appealing about her. My husband was half listening to the call (actually watching tennis) and even he said she is easy to listen to.
