AIPAC Loses Big

NJ-11

As I write this on Friday night, this is where the NJ-11 special primary election to pick the Democrat who will run to replace Mikie Sherrill is standing:

When I checked earlier yesterday, Mejia was ahead by less than a full percentage point. On Thursday night, everyone was (prematurely) congratulating Tom Malinowski. I don’t have access to precinct-level counts, but unless the uncounted ballots are inconsistent with the ones that have already reported, it looks like Mejia, who was endorsed by Bernie, AOC and other progressives, is probably going to squeak this one out after all votes are counted (perhaps after a recount).

AIPAC spent a lot of cash shitting on Malinowski:

Washington, DC – A super PAC linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) has made its first major venture into the United States midterm elections.

But this time around, the pro-Israel lobby group is not targeting a progressive candidate pushing to reset US-Israel policy, but a so-called “moderate” Democrat who tepidly questioned Washington’s unconditional military support amid the genocidal war on Gaza.

The $2.2m spending by the United Democracy Project (UDP) targeting former US Representative Tom Malinowski in advance of the Democratic primary in New Jersey on Thursday comes as polls have consistently shown surging dismay among Democratic voters over unwavering US support for Israel.

Here’s AOC’s take:

Kat Abughazaleh is actively running against AIPAC — the first fundraising email that I got from her that mentioned them was last September. Here’s her latest, posted by Sepideh in yesterday’s comments if you missed it:

AIPAC’s role in the Democratic Party has broken containment — the use of non-threatening PAC names isn’t working. Here’s drag queen Pattiegonia, who has 1.5 million followers on Instagram, linking the Dems who voted for ICE funding to their over $8 million of AIPAC funding:

Anyway, fuck ‘em, and I hope more candidates have their number and call them out explicitly. Support for the current Israeli government (not support for Israel, that’s something different) is a Republican thing, not something Democrats should support. And Chuck Schumer should know and articulate the difference between support for the current government and support for Israel, because Bibi Netanyahu is out to hurt Chuck as much as he is out to hurt every other Democrat.
