AOC is getting some attention because she’s freezing her eggs. She’s doing it in a very AOC way, by which I mean genuine, open, related to the current political situation, and documented on Instagram:
Ocasio-Cortez recognized the balancing act that comes with undergoing fertility treatment with her work as a congresswoman. Ocasio-Cortez told viewers that she would be taking her shots in the dressing room before a scheduled ABC interview on Sunday.
“I want you all to see that,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Because women can do anything. And I think it’s badass that I’m gonna be giving myself shots in the green room, get my glam on, roll out, talk international events, domestic policy, elections, pop out, live my life, do my thing.”
Ocasio-Cortez also showed the medicines and tools, such as syringes and alcohol wipes, used in the process, which involves injecting multiple forms of medication over a period of time that typically lasts about 10 days or more. She joked she would not be injecting herself on a live feed, quipping: “Maybe I should start an ASMR egg-freezing channel.
“Don’t be weird about this, even I know though all of you will be,” she said with a slight smile moments before finding an injection site on her abdomen.
She exhaled, injected the medication, and then remarked: “That wasn’t so bad!”
During her Sunday interview on ABC, Ocasio-Cortez discussed her decision further.
“In this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country and normalize them,” she said.
AOC is very much a millennial politician, and Instagram is heavily used among millennials. This isn’t the first time she’s talked about her reproductive health on Instagram. She had her IUD changed a year or two ago, and she talked about how much it hurt in an Instagram story. This is important: years ago, IUDs were only inserted in women who had already given birth to at least one child, but the new IUDs are being inserted in women who haven’t had children, and the process can be very painful. Of course, since it’s women, not men, analgesia for IUD insertion isn’t well studied and certainly not something that insurance companies would pay for.
Also, according to Sepideh in the comments yesterday, and others, she has broken up with her boyfriend/fiancé, which apparently happened two years ago. Whatever the issues in their relationship, the fact that this news only got out now means that he’s got some decency in him, since he could have had a payday by spilling the beans in our celebrity-obsessed culture.
She and the Bernieplex did not endorse Hong in Wisconsin, and they’re getting some flack about it. She didn’t endorse Platner, either, so I’m going to trust her judgment on this. (Bernie’s judgment, not so much.)
My take is that she should run for President in 2028. The Senate is where political careers go to die. It would be a long, drawn-out fight for her to become Speaker of the House. She’s a generational political talent, and 2028 is going to be one of the most important elections in our history. It’s an amazing opportunity for her and the Democratic Party.
